All teachers who are accepted to participate in the CoastLines project will be expected to fulfill the following requirements:
- Participate in an online course (34 total hours) during March, April, May, and June 2010.
- Attend online sessions after school and on weekends.
- Participate in a two-week, 80-hour summer institute to be held July 12-16 and 19-23, 2010 in Santa Barbara, California.
- Implement a GIS-based CoastLines activity in their classroom during the Fall 2010 school session.
- Attend 6 hours of online support and mentoring sessions to be held September through December 2010.
- Have access to a Windows or Mac computer for the online course, with at least the following specifications:
Windows
Pentium III (at least 450 MHz), 400 MB of free disk space, 512 MB RAM, and Windows 2000, XP, or Vista (2 GB RAM). Also required: Internet Explorer 6.0 or newer, or Mozilla Firefox 2.0 or newer (JavaScript and Java enabled).
Apple
PowerPC G4/G5 or Intel Processor, 400 MB of free disk space, 512 MB RAM, and OS X 10.4 (Tiger) or newer. Also required: Safari 3.0 or newer, Firefox 2.0 or newer (JavaScript and Java enabled).
- Have or be able to obtain administrator privileges on the computer being used during the online course sessions so that they can install the My World GIS software provided by the project.
- Be able to connect to the Internet using a high-speed connection (Cable modem, DSL, or better recommended).
- Have access to VOIP or a telephone next to the computer that will be used during Web conference sessions (must be able to be online and use the telephone at the same time).
- Have an E-mail account that is checked regularly.
- Have access to computers in their classroom or lab for use by students during the Fall 2010 implementation phase of the project.
- Participate in ALL 120 hours of professional development sessions to be conducted by the CoastLines project.
